Honoring Mary Jane Jersey 200th Birthday: A Tribute to Washington Township's Pioneer Legacy
Today, we pay tribute to the enduring legacy of Mary Jane Jersey, the first pioneer settler baby born on February 12, 1824, right here in our cherished Washington Township, Michigan. On what would have been her 200th birthday, Supervisor Sam Previti placed flowers at her grave, honoring her remarkable place in our township's history.
The Jersey family holds a special place in our community, being one of the original three families that settled in Washington Township. Mary Jane Jersey was the daughter of Henry Jersey, a valiant soldier who fought in the War of 1812. She was also the granddaughter of Richard Jersey, a heroic figure who fought in the Revolutionary War. Today, they rest together in the hallowed grounds of the Washington Central Cemetery on 29 Mile Road.
As we commemorate Mary Jane Jersey's 200th birthday, we also pay homage to the indomitable spirit of the early settlers who helped shape the foundation of our township. Their courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to our community continue to inspire us as we reflect on our rich history and the path that led us to where we are today.
Join us in honoring the Jersey family's remarkable legacy and the enduring impact they have had on Washington Township. Let's take a moment to reflect on their contributions and the pioneering spirit that continues to define our community.
